What Causes Back Pain?

The best way to treat a condition, such as back pain, is to understand its causes. This holds true for both the doctors at PriMMed, as well as the patients treated by its clinics. While the medical team manages the treatment of back pain, they also believe it’s important for those they take care of to understand root causes.

With that in mind, PriMMed is sharing a few major causes of pain in the back, as well as other extremities, along with back pain treatments and preventions. The following are considerations taken by diagnosing physicians, while also offering pathways for those suffering from back pain, or those who want to minimize back pain, to slow down or prevent any further challenges.

Herniated Discs: Either through injury or age, herniated discs are a major cause of back pain and often go undiagnosed. This is the case as people can mistakenly think their back pain is part of aging and don’t get treatment. Ways of decreasing the odds of having a herniated disc include losing weight and lifting weight with your knees, rather than your back.

Bone Spurs: Spurs (bony projections that develop along the edges of bones) can impinge on spinal nerves. Bone spurs can occur due to natural wear and tear that comes from age. Some ways to help slow down that wear and tear include getting regular exercise, using proper posture and improving your diet.

Spine/Spinal Cord Tumors: Tumors on the spine or spinal cord require medical attention, as some may be cancerous. Treatments can include microsurgery, ultrasound and laser surgery. Tumors, while not highly common, offer another reason to not allow back pain to go unchecked for long.

Vertebrae and Sacrum Fractures: Fractures are rare, but a curable cause of low-back pain. Most treatments include rest and physical therapy, but in certain instances, PriMMEd may recommend a more advanced treatment.

Spinal Tuberculosis: More common in children and young adults, spinal tuberculosis accounts for approximately half of all cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. This is an instance where young people need to very mindful of back pain, and not dismiss it due to other factors such as being active. Without diagnosis and treatment, the condition can be extremely destructive.

Sacroiliitis: This condition is caused by inflammation of sacroiliac joints where your spine and pelvis connect and can be treated by physical therapy and certain medications. Stretching exercises can help with the condition, as well, with programs set up by your doctor being recommended.

In each of these instances, as well as other related to chronic pain in the back, PriMMED recommends that everyone use proper techniques while lifting items (even ones that don’t feel heavy), that they pursue a healthy diet along with regular exercise, and to never let back pain go unchecked for long without consulting a medical professional.

One is five adults in the United States suffer from moderate to severe chronic pain, including back pain. PriMMed (formerly Southern Nevada Pain Specialists) can help, and its physicians like Dr. Pouya Mohajer, invite those seeking to live pain-free lives to call 702-798-0111.
